Djelloul Marbrook

My first book of poems, Far From Algiers, was published in September 2008 by Kent State University Press. It is the 2007 winner of the Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize. I began writing it after Sept. 11, 2001, walking around Manhattan and reflecting on the pain of not belonging. My poems have appeared in American Poetry Review, Barrow Street, The Ledge, Chronogram and a number of other journals. I am available for readings in the Hudson Valley and Manhattan.

My short story, Artists Hill, is the 2008 Literal Latté fiction prize winner. It's set in Woodstock's artists cemetery. Other short fiction has been published by Brent Robison's Prima Materia (Mt. Tremper), Breakfast All Day (UK), and Potomac Review (DC). A novella, Alice Miller's Room, was published by OnlineOriginals (UK). Another novella, Saraceno, was published by Open Book Press (Canada).

I live in Germantown, Columbia County, with my wife, Marilyn, an editor. My weblog, djelloulmarbrook.com, offers social and literary dialogue.—DM

Early Endorsements for “A Circle of Souls”

Linda Fairstein, NYT Bestselling Author: "A fascinating debut - this novel takes the reader to the darkest places in the human soul, from a writer with the authenticity to lead us there. A stunning thriller and an important read."

Judge Judy Sheindlin, star of the Judge Judy Show: "The seminal work of this fine author kept me glued to my chair until the adventure was over and the mystery solved. A great read!"

Book Synopsis:

The sleepy town of Newbury, Connecticut, is shocked when a little girl is found brutally murdered. The town s top detective, perplexed by a complete lack of leads, calls in FBI agent Leia Bines, an expert in cases involving children.

Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Gram, a psychiatrist at Newbury s hospital, searches desperately for the cause of seven-year-old Naya Hastings devastating nightmares. Afraid that she might hurt herself in the midst of a torturous episode, Naya s parents have turned to the bright young doctor as their only hope.

The situations confronting Leia and Peter converge when Naya begins drawing chilling images of murder after being bombarded by the disturbing images in her dreams. Amazingly, her sketches are the only clues to the crime that has panicked Newbury residents. Against her better judgment, Leia explores the clues in Naya s crude drawings, only to set off an alarming chain of events.
In this stunning psychological thriller, innocence gives way to evil, and trust lies forgotten in a web of deceit, fear, and murder.

Sorry it took so long to respond, but for some reason I didn't get a notification of your last comment.
But, yes, I love the idea of recording written work, which I always imagine as "spoken word" when I am writing it. Adding music just puts that finishing touch on it.
I also wonder, whether putting our writing (up here even) constitutes publishing. And whether, therefore, when submitting it for magazines etc. it would be considered as having been published already.
Well, as nobody is banging my door down to put my fiction in their magazine (I refuse to pay to have it included in compilations) then the web is our best bet. One way or the other, it's out there.
Best regards.

Thanks for your comment Djelloul. I'd be interested in reading Far from Algiers. I clicked on the link above but it doesn't get me to your book (you might want to check that out). Maybe you could post a couple of the poems up here.
